Home Theater has become a very significant part of the home electronics industry for more than a decade. The entertainment experience that a well designed Home Theater system can offer, in the comfort of your own home, is pretty amazing. Watching a good movie or a music concert with your friends or loved ones is a fun way to spend an evening together. Great sound and great picture quality can significantly

enhance the experience. Convincingly accurate sound, will tend to grip you more on an emotional level and hold your attention. Superb picture quality tends to do the same thing, on a visual level.

With the advent of High Definition programming, picture quality has skyrocketed to a whole new level. The higher resolution of HDTV, gives sporting events, a “you are there” perspective. Travel and nature documentaries can be absolutely mesmerizing. If you have a high quality, High Definition capable Plasma display or Front Projection display, your display device becomes more like a window to the world, with the greater clarity and color quality of High Definition programming. Be advised that no two products are created equal. As with audio components, so is the case with video components. There are real differences that can be demonstrated and seen. After all, not everything can be the best in its class.

Our Passion    and our goal at Advanced Audio Systems, is to introduce you to equipment of the highest standards and quality, that is worth purchasing. At the same time, we will accurately inform you, and dispel the myths and misinformation, in guiding you towards the highest quality you can afford. We put a strong emphasis on value as well as performance. Better equipment is simply better. Proper demonstrations will allow you to hear and see the differences.

There is a lot that could be said about Home Theater systems. Basically the same fundamental principles apply to Home Theater sound as apply to two channel only sound, with one fundamental difference. A Home Theater surround sound Preamp/ Processor or a Home Theater surround sound receiver utilizes an onboard computer to process Dolby Digital and DTS encoded programming that uses a lot of compression. The onboard computer will do fine for movie sound tracks that are Dolby Digital and DTS encoded, but will tend to impair the absolute performance potential of good two channel music only CD’s, SACD’s, DVD-Audio and LP’s. With this in mind one can use a two channel separate preamp for the main front left and right channels for music only playback, and then engage a Home Theater surround sound Preamp/Processor or Home Theater surround sound receiver for movies or multi-channel sources. If you are aiming for a system, that does the best possible double duty for both music and movies, then consider this approach. For a more complete in depth treatise of the above, check out the Audio Perfectionist Journal Number 10 2003 or click on www.audioperfectionist.com and look at Excerpts from Journal 10.

Eliminate the weak links   In order to achieve the best possible audio and video performance from any system, one must eliminate any weak links. This begins with the source. The old saying of garbage in and garbage out, is, and always will be true. For instance, MP3 is not a high quality source for good sound. It may sound fine on your computer or in your portable player, but won’t sound very good on a high-resolution audio system. It would be like comparing standard definition, television broadcasts, to HDTV broadcasts, on a high- resolution display device. There is simply no comparison. With that said, consider the best possible source components, for your audio and your video systems. The highest quality sources for audio reproduction are, the vinyl LP, SACD, DVD-Audio and CD. The highest quality sources for video reproduction are HDTV, D-VHS and DVD. Applying the same logic throughout the entire system, including audio and video interconnects and speaker wire, will result in a high performance, no weak links system.

Another very important part of a good system is the installation, especially Home Theater systems. If you desire high performance as well as an elegant integration into your particular decor, then expert installation is paramount. There are many considerations for both sound and picture quality. Positioning issues, mounting issues, AC issues, calibration and of course your particular personal aesthetic issues. Our customers are discerning, quality conscious people who are interested in high-value, high-performance products that enhance their lives. We have included a section with examples, of some of the Home Theater installations we have done. All of these installations reflect the fine work of Daniel Apahidean, our primary installation person.

Personally speaking, my interest in movies began at an early age. My grandfather, James Curtis Havens, was a movie Director, Art Director, Cinematographer, Marine Director and Nautical Engineer. He had worked on roughly 80 films in his career, from the early 30’s through the late 60’s. Many classic movies came out of this period. I have often heard this era referred to as the “golden years” of Hollywood. My grandfather did indeed work on some of the classics. The following may or may not be of interest to you, but if you are read on.
